How to choose an injection mold manufacturer
Tooling is capital you cannot easily get back once it is cut. This is the checklist we would want if we were the buyer: what to ask about capability, tolerance, certification, ownership, and minimum volume before you sign a purchase order.
Why this decision is hard to reverse
A mold is built to one supplier's process window: their press tonnage, their steel choice, their gate and cooling layout. Moving a finished tool to a second manufacturer is possible but is its own project, with inspection, sometimes rework, and downtime while it happens. The cost of picking wrong is not the piece price, it is the switching cost afterward. That is why the questions below are about how a manufacturer works, not just what they quote.
Ask for the actual capability, not a marketing range
A website tonnage range tells you what a company's fleet spans, not what is free for your job, and not whether a press outside that range is a partner machine rather than one on their own floor. Ask instead:
- Which specific press would run this part, and its tonnage, shot size, and platen dimensions
- Whether that press is owned or run through a partner, and what that changes about scheduling and quality oversight
- Maximum cavitation the tool can support at the volumes you need, not the press's theoretical maximum
- Which of your materials they run in house versus source out

A manufacturer who marks a number "pending" rather than just stating it is telling you something useful about how they handle claims generally.
Ask how tolerance is actually held, not just claimed
"Precision molding" on a homepage means nothing on its own. A real answer names a standard and shows the method:
- Which tolerance standard they quote against by default (DIN 16742 is the common one) and which group your material falls into, since that changes the number, not just the material name
- How they hold anything tighter than the standard group: steel cut deliberately undersized and opened after first samples ("steel-safe") is the normal method, not a machine that is simply more accurate
- Whether critical dimensions are CMM-verified on a fixture, and at what frequency through a production run, or only measured once at first article
- What a tighter tolerance actually adds to the price, and whether they can point to which features drove it

Separate what is certified from what is claimed
"ISO certified" without a scope or number means nothing; ISO 9001 (quality management) and IATF 16949 (automotive) and ISO 13485 (medical device) are different certifications with different audits, and a manufacturer can legitimately hold one and not the others. Ask for the certificate number and the certified site by name, not just the standard's name, and check whether a claimed capability like a cleanroom is a rated, classified space or just a clean assembly area. Get tool ownership and transfer terms in writing before the purchase order
This is the clause buyers read last and should read first:
- Who owns the tool once it is paid in full, and what document proves it
- Where it is stored between production runs, and who insures it there
- Who pays for routine maintenance, and what happens when a cavity wears and needs re-cutting
- The notice period and process for transferring a paid-for tool to a different manufacturer
- Whether they will receive, inspect, and run a tool that was built elsewhere

Understand the real minimum volume, and why
Injection molding has no contractual minimum in the way a distributor's price break does. What sets a practical floor is the tooling cost divided across a small run: below a few hundred pieces, that division usually makes CNC machining or 3D printing, which carry no tool cost at all, cheaper overall even at a higher piece price. Ask what a manufacturer's own economic floor is and whether they will say plainly when your volume does not clear it, rather than sell a tool that will not pay for itself. Specify material by grade, not by family
"PA66" is a family name, not a specification. PA66 unfilled and PA66-GF30 shrink differently, sit in different DIN 16742 tolerance groups, and cannot share a mold without a design change. A manufacturer who quotes back a grade, not just a family, and asks which grade you meant when you did not specify one, is reading your drawing properly. A short checklist to send with your RFQ
- Which press runs this part, and is it owned or partnered
- DIN 16742 group (or your quoted standard) for the material you specified
- Certificate numbers for any certification claimed, not just the standard's name
- Tool ownership and transfer terms, in writing
- Your economic minimum order quantity and what happens below it
- Confirmation of material grade, not just family, against your drawing
- Tooling and piece price as two separate numbers, plus the cavitation and annual volume the piece price assumes
A manufacturer who answers all seven without hedging has probably quoted enough real parts to know the answers cold. One who cannot is not necessarily wrong for the job, but you are the one absorbing that risk, so price it in.

Who owns the tool, and what proves it. Tooling is usually the largest single cost in a new part program, and ownership disputes surface only when a buyer wants to move production, at which point they have no leverage left. Get it in writing before the purchase order, not after.
Is a lower piece price always a worse sign?
No, but an unexplained one is. Piece price depends on cavitation, annual volume, material grade, and tolerance, so two quotes are only comparable once you know all four assumptions behind each number. A lower price with a lower cavitation or a lighter tolerance is not automatically a worse deal, it may just be a different one.
Does "ISO certified" mean a manufacturer meets automotive or medical standards?
Not by itself. ISO 9001 is a general quality management certification. IATF 16949 (automotive) and ISO 13485 (medical device) are separate, more specific certifications with their own audits. A manufacturer can legitimately hold ISO 9001 and neither of the others. Ask for the certificate number and scope, not just the standard's name.
